Seems like WWE had huge ambition for SummerSlam 2009, given how many matches were once penciled in for the card. In addition to the scrapped Divas' title match, Kofi Kingston was in line to defend the United States Championship against Carlito. Dave Meltzer noted in the Wrestling Observer that the match was scheduled, but probably wasn't considered for long.

Like the Mickie/Gail match, Kingston and Carlito's US title match was instead relegated to the go-home Raw six nights before SummerSlam. They received much more time, more than nine minutes before Kingston won with Trouble in Paradise.

The match was also notable for Rosa Mendes appearing as Carlito's second, without any explanation whatsoever. Rosa's entire WWE career really was the equivalent of being an Oscar night seat-filler.
