The match would mark Shawn Michaels' first in-ring action since he and Undertaker put together one of the greatest WWE bouts ever at WrestleMania 25. The full-blown reunion of D-Generation X after petering out in 2007 (save for some one-off tag matches) had potential to be the highlight of the night, even if opponents Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase were still finding their footing.

Even days before SummerSlam, The Wrestling Observer reported that DX vs. Legacy was under consideration to close out the pay-per-view. Since plans were for heels Randy Orton and CM Punk to walk out of SummerSlam with both World Championships, the thought was that the fans could go home happy after seeing a reunited DX triumph.

WWE stuck with a heel winning at the end, but made sure to put a babyface spin on Punk's celebration by having Undertaker throttle him.
