The SummerSlam 2010 opener showed promise: an Intercontinental title match pitting champion Dolph Ziggler against challenger Kofi Kingston. After Ziggler's coming-out party against Rey Mysterio one year earlier, fans would be expect a similar delightfully-spotty showcase between these two high-flyers. Sadly, a Nexus beatdown of both men after seven minutes snuffed out a match that had ambition.

Earlier plans for the match were for it to be a six-way that would have also included Christian, Cody Rhodes, Matt Hardy, and the aforementioned McIntyre. The Wrestling Observer notes that promotional materials sent to Sky Sports in the UK had this match listed.

It's possible that McIntyre's role in the incident with Taryn Terrell got him pulled from the match, although someone like Evan Bourne or Jack Swagger could've easily been slotted in. That wouldn't make it clear why the others were jettisoned from the match. One theory is that if the Nexus were going to run in and destroy the combatants, it might look more realistic to destroy two men instead of six.
