After CM Punk defeated John Cena in the "unification match" to determine the undisputed WWE Champion, a series of events took place that would meld conspiracy with destiny. Del Rio's "destiny" was to have become WWE champion far sooner. According to Dave Meltzer, Del Rio was meant to win the WWE Championship at the TLC pay-per-view in 2010, just four months after his debut. His championship push was a stop-start one up until SummerSlam, as the company also backed off on earlier plans to put him over Edge at WrestleMania 27.
