After CM Punk defeated John Cena in the "unification match" to determine the undisputed WWE Champion, a series of events took place that would meld conspiracy with destiny. Kevin Nash jumped Punk in a seemingly random assault, setting the stage for Alberto Del Rio to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase and become WWE Champion.

Del Rio's "destiny" was to have become WWE champion far sooner. According to Dave Meltzer, Del Rio was meant to win the WWE Championship at the TLC pay-per-view in 2010, just four months after his debut. His championship push was a stop-start one up until SummerSlam, as the company also backed off on earlier plans to put him over Edge at WrestleMania 27. It took until SummerSlam 2011, but they finally put Del Rio into the top spot, as they'd been intending.
