10 Fascinating WWE SummerSlam 2014 Facts
7. It Had The First Intercontinental Title Change At SummerSlam In Six Years
Between 1988 and 2002, the Intercontinental belt changed hands at 12 of the first 15 SummerSlams. The event functioned as a haven to give the fans a major title change while keeping the current World Champion strong. From 2003 through 2016, the IC belt only swapped waists twice in those 14 shows. Once was in 2008, when Beth Phoenix pinned Mickie James to procure the gold for Santino Marella in a mixed tag team match.
The only time between 2003 and 2016 that the IC belt changed hands at SummerSlam with the champion actually taking the fall was when Dolph Ziggler pinned The Miz in the 2014 opener. The eight-minute match felt like a compressed 14-minute match, with a lively pace and lots of near-falls toward the end. It wasn't their surprisingly-awesome No Mercy 2016 match, but it was pretty damn good for what it was.
