In the olden days, cable companies were negotiated with individually, and many had personally given their word to Crockett that they would air Starrcade. Most, if not all, were happy to bundle it with Survivor Series as two huge revenue streams. And then McMahon stepped in.

Not wanting Crockett to benefit in any way, McMahon told all the cable companies that if they aired Starrcade at all, he wouldn't let them air his big money-maker: WrestleMania.

Out of all the cable companies that gave Crockett their word, only five stayed loyal once the threat was made: four in the Carolinas, and one in San Jose, CA. The rest all dropped Starrcade's availability once the idea of missing out on WrestleMania IV was floated by WWE's boss. For those cable providers, Survivor Series would be the only game in town.
