The clever finish to the "Towel" match saw Backlund snare Hart in a chicken wing for roughly ten minutes. Because Hart's cornerman Davey Boy Smith was rendered unconscious after a chase with Owen Hart (Backlund's cornerman), nobody was there to throw in the towel for Bret. Feigning tears, Owen conned mother Helen (sitting in the front row) into throwing in the towel for her own son, causing his defeat. It was Acting 101 from Owen.

To sell the effects of being in the chicken wing for an ungodly amount of time, Bret was given six weeks off, not returning until the January 9 Raw tapings in Houston. According to Bret, it was the longest time he was given off of wrestling in a full decade.
