Backlund had regained the belt that he had lost 11 years earlier, when Arnold Skaaland threw in the towel for his own well-being. At the time of the loss to The Iron Sheik, Backlund was 34 years old, and begrudgingly stepping aside for the incoming Hulkamania wave.

With the Survivor Series win, Backlund was capturing the gold at age 45, becoming the oldest WWE Champion in the process. The previous mark was set by Sgt. Slaughter in 1991, who was 42 years, 5 months old when he won the belt from The Ultimate Warrior.

Backlund's mark has since been broken by Vince McMahon, who was 54 when he won the belt under gag circumstances in 1999. In other words, we all have to wait about 23 years for Roman Reigns to set a new record. And he will.
