Since it was the first ever Elimination Chamber match, there weren't any prior standards that needed to be lived up to, nor was there a static model from which to structure the entire match. Despite the presence of six experienced ring veterans, piecing together the eventual 40-minute main event wasn't an easy task.

Chris Jericho notes that he and the other participants showed up hours before show time to figure out how they were going to fill the body of the match. Ideas were thrown around, but nothing was set in stone. All they had were loose thoughts.

Michaels and Helmsley were the last two men remaining in the match, and squared off alone for ten minutes. Jericho adds that the entire finish was improvised, as "the planning hadn't gotten that far by the time the match began."
