To make matters worse, one of the participants that was highly capable of "circling the wagons" when a match breaks down was barely able to communicate. Triple H's ring generalship would've come in handy during the disarray, but he was already dealing with a crisis of his own.

Earlier in the match, Rob Van Dam performed a Five-Star Frog Splash off of a retaining pod onto Helmsley. Because of the greater height and the awkward stance Van Dam had to take due to the cage roof forcing him into a crouch, Van Dam didn't hit the target properly, causing his knee to smash into Helmsley's neck.

The inside of Helmsley's throat immediately swelled up, causing serious breathing issues, and making it hard to communicate with others in the match. Helmsley managed to make it through the rest of the bout, before being held overnight at a New York hospital to make sure the swelling didn't continue, potentially suffocating him.
