Edge's Money in the Bank cash-in on John Cena in January 2006 was just the moment Adam Copeland needed to crystallize himself as an undoubted main eventer. Unfortunately, his reign as champion only lasted three weeks, and he would need another way onto the WrestleMania 22 card. An insta-feud with Mick Foley opened the doors for a hardcore match, and the chance to do something memorably crazy.

The flaming table spot that rightfully ended the bloodbath was Edge's idea. He'd made the suggestion knowing that Foley would be on board, given his own history of self-maiming in the name of spectacle and art.

Edge would later say that he was of the mind that he deserved to main event WrestleMania, and if that wasn't going to happen, then he would do something to put the spotlight on him, letting everybody know who the real main eventer was. For his daring stunt, Edge received some minor burns, and the respect of many.
