While he grew up idolizing Ric Flair's larger-than-life persona and his ring generalship, Shawn Michaels had no way of knowing that he'd get to work with Flair in what was nominally the in-ring swan song of "The Nature Boy". Michaels took on the bittersweet task of not only being across the ring with his hero for that occasion, but also designing the match in a way that would be a fitting end for Flair.

Michaels also wanted to mark the occasion by doing something special for Flair, and had two diamond Rolex watches custom-made for himself and the outgoing legend. As Michaels tells it, given Flair's penchant for Rolex watches (an extravagant item he would often allude to as a high-life-living character), it gave "The Heartbreak Kid" a chance to share in one of Flair's lavish luxuries with him.

Flair revealed that each watch had an inscription. Flair's reads, "Richard Fliehr vs. Shawn Michaels: To Be the Man", and Michaels' reads, "Richard Fliehr vs. Shawn Michaels: You Gotta Beat the Man".
