2. Europe Rules (Well, Ireland, Specifically...)

WWE has developed into an increasingly international organisation, with superstars from all four corners of the Earth (the Earth does not have corners, for the record). Still, men and women hailing from the USA tend to dominate, which is to be somewhat expected. Not including the battle royals, 30 out of the 44 competitors were born in the United States. Next on the list? Australia, with four names.

Well, you can keep your stars and stripes, because the last two matches of the night were won by wrestlers hailing from the Emerald Isle. That's Ireland, by the way. Bray's own Finn Balor defeated Bobby Lashley for the Intercontinental Championship in the penultimate match of the night, before Limerick's Becky Lynch made history by winning the first female main event in WrestleMania history.

Becky was actually the first European to main event WrestleMania, let alone the first European to win that prestigious match, and WrestleMania 35 marked the first time in 'Mania history that the top two matches were won by people from outside North America. Drew McIntyre backed up this showing of Celtic superiority a year later, defeating Brock Lesnar in front of zero fans in the main event of WrestleMania 36.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
