10 Forgotten WWE Experiments That Didn't Last
6. Muffy “The Fat Slayer”
Every now and then, WWE likes to remind the paying public that they're not as fit, healthy or motivated as the superstars plying their trade between the ropes. Heel gimmicks such as Simon Dean playing a fitness instructor got on everyone's nerves to an extent, but this generally has a limited shelf life. Here's the deal.
Many wrestling fans know they don't look like Finn Bálor, and they're perfectly fine with that.
So, short-lived skits that saw Stephanie McMahon's kayfabe personal trainer tell people in the cheap seats that they'd reach them less out of puff if they'd just get on the treadmill 3x per week fell on deaf ears. Muffy, played by Caryn Mower, was the one who delivered this news through interludes between matches.
Speaking of Simon Dean, it was that before Nova was repackaged and played the gimmick. Muffy strutted out on stage to berate fans for “being fat” for a few minutes, then she went away again. Afterwards, the dude in Row Q ambled his way down to concessions to check out some 'Stone Cold' merch and maybe get some popcorn. He didn't immediately join the gym and vow to become The Ultimate Warrior.
Clearly, this was an attempt at cheap heel heat and wasn't to be taken super-seriously, but it was too half-baked to really feel important. Muffy had next to no connection to the audience, and it wasn't like Steph was known for being Shawn Michaels circa 1996 back in the year 2000. She barely wrestled at all despite being Women's Champion.
Swing and a miss. No wonder it didn't have staying power.
