10 Forgotten WWE Masked Men
3. Ultimo Dragon
Hold your horses...hold them! There is no denying that Ultimo Dragon is one of the most recognisable masked wrestlers of the last quarter century but his time in WWE is largely glossed over - how many moments do you remember? Being a cultural icon in his home country of Japan, appearing in movies, television shows and even comic books, Ultimo Dragon found success in the west when he became part of the popular Cruiserweight division in WCW.
It was around this time in 1998 that Dragon suffered an arm injury that required an operation. Unfortunately there were complications in the surgery and he was left with such severe nerve damage that he was forced to announce his retirement. After nearly 5 years Dragon would undergo another surgery to try repair the damage allowing him to toy with the idea of a return to the ring.
After several practice matches and extensive training, Dragon was ready and in talks with WWE about a run in the company. Despite a long and illustrious career, Dragon had two goals he longed to achieve in wrestling - to wrestle at Madison Square Garden and to perform at Wrestlemania. He would fulfill both after not only debuting at The Garden, but also taking part in the Cruiserweight Invitational at Wrestlemania 20 in the same arena.
Despite high hopes of making a similar impact as Rey Mysterio, Dragon was used more on Heat and Velocity only flirting with more high profile angles on the card. Some argue that he wasn't the high flying "new Mysterio" that WWE were expecting and his slip during his Mania entrance only soured Vince McMahon's view on him even more.
In Dragons defense, he was wearing an elaborate cape and it's not like Vince McMahon has ever botched an entrance so spectacularly that he couldn't even stand up...and he wasn't even wearing a cape.
