8. The New Day

In 2014, three superstars who were not doing a whole lot with their singles careers grouped together to create what would eventually become one of the WWE’s most successful stables of all time.

Vince McMahon, in his waning wisdom, thought that the hyper-positive preacher stable of Kingston, Woods and Big E was sure to get over as babyfaces. However, in their debut, their presentation was so surprising that you could hear a pin drop in an arena full of confused fans. Soon thereafter, arenas began to fill with chants of “New Day Sucks”.

Inevitably this led to a heel turn, which is where the wheels really began to move. The most obvious and tired answer would be to turn the three into something altogether more aggressive or perhaps even militant. Instead, the characters of The New Day as loud, obnoxious and high spirited didn’t really change. They just began to chastise the audience for not being able to see things from their point of view.

The latent entertainment value of the three as a group and their clear enjoyment of working together creatively instead made The New Day the most important and watched segment of every show for the next several months. Even more importantly, when they shifted back to being fan favourites, the same process was followed as before: their personalities didn’t change, merely their opponents.
