10 Gimmicks WWE Should Bring Back For The PG Era
Because wrestling is supposed to be fun.
Whenever current WWE fans are displeased with the state of the product, the one thing they're quick to point out as the primary reason for their decrease in enjoyment is the PG rating that the company now abides by. In their opinion, PG is the thing that is 'ruining' the WWE. WWE switched to the PG rating in mid-2008. The main reason for doing so was in order to get more money via advertising. WWE had long been turning off specific advertisers with their raunchy material. Now, they wanted their money. So it was out with bleeding, swearing and sexual material and in with poop jokes and more John Cena. While older fans roll their eyes at the sight of the likes of the Bunny, Hornswoggle and El Torito, it can be argued that they do have their place in wrestling. The WWE is a variety show, as much as anything else, and has to appeal to a wide range of demographics. Kids find these gimmicks and storylines entertaining, even if they make the more mature audience hit fast-forward. Wrestling is supposed to be fun and silly gimmicks do have merit. If everyone on the show was a serious a**-kicker it would get really boring, really fast. The PG era is here to stay (at least until WWE's Mattel contract runs out) so why not bring back a couple more fun PG-friendly gimmicks from the past?
