Throughout his run, Owen Hart flirted briefly with the main event scene. In 1994, he opposed his brother, Bret, and the pair constructed a memorable feud over the WWF Title. It's fair to surmise that Vince McMahon never really viewed Owen as a main event guy however, otherwise he would have presented him as such. Following the 'Montreal Screwjob' at the 1997 Survivor Series, the promotion missed out on one glaring opportunity with Owen. Returning to the WWF, the Canadian appeared furious with McMahon over how he had treated his sibling, and fans responded in kind by taking the situation seriously. Re-dubbed the 'Black Hart', Owen had a meaner exterior to go along with his superb in-ring skills. Confusingly, this was never really followed up on. The chance was there to establish Owen Hart as a main eventer, but he was back in the mid-card by the turn of 1998. Later joining The Nation Of Domination, it became clear that those in charge didn't think Owen had enough about him to become a top liner. Many fans disagree, and it's baffling management didn't at least try.
