10 Glaring Main Event Pushes WWE Missed Out On

3. Davey Boy Smith

Bret Hart once remarked that Davey Boy Smith's biggest obstacle was himself. Packing incredible muscle onto his physique, the Englishman struggled to keep pace with Hart at SummerSlam 1992. Literally telling Bret that he was blowing up badly, Smith somehow managed to get through the rest of the match. His Intercontinental Title win and performance during the match should have shown Vince McMahon that The British Bulldog was main event material. Rather than acting as a launching pad for the man, Davey Boy was gone from the WWF by the end of '92. McMahon pointed to shipments received by Smith of Human Growth Hormone as reasoning for his release. The Bulldog would return in 1994, and again he was treated as someone on the cusp of the main event. Smith did main event several Pay-Per-Views (against Kevin Nash, Bret Hart and others) going forward, but he was never in the main event mix full-time. In 1995, when McMahon had less stars to rely on that ever before, that shouldn't have been the case. Davey Boy Smith was someone fans reacted to in a big way when he came through the curtain, and he surely deserved a run with the WWF Title.
