10 Great Matches Starring Dud Wrestlers
8. Macho Man Randy Savage Vs. Ultimate Warrior - WWF WrestleMania VII
The Warrior, along with Hulk Hogan, jointly holds the record for the lowest-rated wrestling match in history. Their travesty at Halloween Havoc 1998 was awarded -***** by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. He was better in the ring during his original WWF run, but not by much.
Ironically for a match predicated on a forced retirement stipulation, its quality is mostly attributed to the choices made by Savage throughout. This wasn't a back-and-forth encounter between two equals, like Warrior's match with Hogan the previous year.
From the outset, Savage in the heel role positions himself as inferior and desperate, relying almost entirely on Sensational Sherri's interference and ref bumps to snatch the advantage away from the Warrior, who isn't merely a passenger here.
His selling is first rate and his comebacks are timed impeccably, and he moves with a hitherto rarely seen smoothness under the expert guidance of his peerless opponent.
Unlike Hogan, Savage didn't undermine Warrior by reacting to his loss as if it were an aberration. Like the pro he was, he allowed Warrior to beat him soundly in an attempt to revive his standing as the man.
Warrior would never reach these heights again, but his once in a lifetime performance to this day remains one of the most memorable in the company's history.
