10 Great Wrestlers Who Totally Reinvented Themselves
3. Chris Jericho
One could almost make a top ten consisting solely of Chris Jericho's reinventions over the years. Almost like the David Bowie of pro wrestling, Jericho has constantly updated his persona and image with the times.
Arguably 'Y2J's finest reconfiguarion in WWE was his 2008 heel turn on Shawn Michaels. Stripping away the glitz, humour and style of his longtime, flamboyant rocker persona, a newly miserable Jericho donned a sharp suit, took several pages out of the Nick Bockwinkel promo playbook and drove fans mad with his hateful, bitter rhetoric.
Prior to the surprise turn, Jericho's '07-'08 return to WWE had been considered disappointing by most. Replaying his old hits to lesser returns, 'The Demo God' meandered through blah feuds with Randy Orton and JBL. Sensing a need for change, we got this "honest man" character and the iconic '08 feud with HBK.
Eight years later, Jericho did the opposite, fully embracing his funny side in his comedic dynamic with Kevin Owens. From The List to the scarf enthusiasm, Jericho's goofy eccentric persona led to a well-received babyface turn, allowing him to close out his time in WWE as a fan favourite once again.
More recently, Jericho's adopted a newer, crazier rock star persona in NJPW and AEW. With the long hair back and a selection of curious outfits and tattoos on display, the larger-than-life veteran became the inaugural AEW World Champion and solidified himself as an essential figure in a new generation of professional wrestling.
