Quite simply, the best WWE match to end in disqualification in history.

In 1996, the World Wrestling Federation so desperately wanted Shawn Michaels to be the biggest babyface in wrestling. The problem was that they had pretty much neutered everything that was great about him during his championship run, and he was coming off as vanilla as the ice cream flavour we all want but don't want to order in case someone accuses us of being boring.

Luckily, Mick Foley is a legitimate wrestling genius, and he turned up here to add some depth and edge to the Heartbreak Kid character. Foley was Mankind, and Mankind was a genuine threat to Michaels' WWF Championship. Shawn was going to have to embrace the hate in order to retain his title.

He did just this, busting out some seriously brutal violence in the hope of putting the deranged one down. The only problem was, the deranged one wouldn't stay down. Still, this match was vital in that Michaels evolved from being an entertainer into a champion.

It was a vital match, and it still stands up some 20 years later today. Sure, Vader comes down to ruin everything, but this doesn't take away from the almost 30 minutes that comes first.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
