There is some sadness to this match looking back. Judgment Day 2004 delivered such a terrible buy-rate that it pretty much ended Eddie Guerrero's run as champion, with Latino Heat opting out before he was taken out. SmackDown had a pretty awful start to the year anyway, as the blue brand struggled with the loss of Brock Lesnar (left to try his luck at the NFL), Kurt Angle (injured) and Chris Benoit (moved to Raw).

Still, Eddie Guerrero and John 'Bradshaw' Layfield went out in the main event of that show and put one one of the most violent brawls WWE has ever seen. JBL was visibly nervous to begin with, understandable considering he was in his first PPV main event, but the two soon settled and contested an intense fight.

There are some truly uncomfortable chair shots in this match to both men, and the blade-job that Eddie does has reached practically legendary status, just about breaking the Muta Scale. The match ended in a DQ when Eddie hit JBL with the WWE Championship. The title would change hands at the next Smackdown PPV, the infamously naff Great American Bash.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
