10 Great WWE United States Championship Matches You Completely Forgot About

This was a two-out-of-three-falls match and, not only that, but it was a bloody unique too. MVP, the heel, picked up the victory and the title with two straight wins over the champion, the veteran Chris Benoit. 2-0 wins in 2/3 matches are rare enough, let alone 2-0 wins for the bad guy without any overt cheating or other shenanigans.

MVP wins the first fall via Playmaker, and the second via Small Package. No cheating, no nefarious means, just clever wrestling and the benefits of focusing a limb. MVP focuses on Benoit's leg throughout, and this plays into both finishes. The Canadian's leg buckles under MVP's weight for the first, and MVP's blows whilst in the Sharpshooter to allow him to roll up the Crippler for the second.

This was MVP's coming out party in many ways, and he would go on to have a long, long reign as champion (343 days). You may remember this match as being somewhat disappointing, but you are wrong. Trust me. Watch it and learn.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
