10 Greatest Cage Matches In WWE History
4. Triple H Vs. Steve Austin - No Way Out 2001
When discussing awesome cage matches in WWE history, one bout that is always overlooked is the steel cage war between 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin and Triple H at No Way Out 2001. With bad blood stemming from Triple H's orchestration of Austin's drive by assault at Survivor Series '99, the animosity would come to a head in brutal and gripping fashion.
Unlike the other matches on this list, the caged collision between 'Stone Cold' and 'The Game was part of a bigger overall picture. The match itself was a 'Two Out of Three Falls' stipulation match (later rechristened a 'Three Stages of Hell' match), with the first fall contested under standard rules, the second under 'Street Fight' rules, and the third inside a cage.
At almost 40 minutes from start to finish, the three fall bout had already gone 30 minutes by the time the cage was lowered, making the subsequent action even more impressive. The cage portion of the bout could have been a standalone match in itself, but the preceding 30 minutes of carnage made the overall match the stuff of legend.
With both men a bloody mess going into the final fall, JR on commentary put it best: "What a fitting final chapter in the Stone Cold/Triple H saga."
