10 Greatest Cage Matches On The WWE Network
3. Chris Benoit vs Kurt Angle - Raw 11/06/2001
It’s rare that you’ll see a match that gives everyone involved inside the ring and out such a comprehensive boost. Firstly there are the competitors, Angle and Benoit in the middle of an exceptional series, the two exhibiting immense chemistry and showing off a bevvy of suplexes and hard shots.
Then there’s the nonsense at the commentary desk, heel champ Steve Austin joining a bitter Jim Ross and a simpering Paul Heyman, with every character strengthened by their contributions.
It’s no surprise that Kurt and Chris put on another barnburner. More surprising are some of the bumps taken. First, Angle scales the cage before launching into his aesthetically glorious moonsault to the mat. He misses - it looks painful. Next, Benoit decides to follow suit with a sickening headbutt from the summit. Knowing what we know now, it’s terrifying, but in the context of the match it’s another layer of heightening drama.
This match could easily headline the majority of pay per views - to give it away on free TV is somewhere between generosity and craziness, and speaks to the sheer graft and graft of the men involved.
