The Four Horsemen is the greatest wrestling faction, period. Sure, it's fun to chortle at Mongo McMichael or have a snigger at Paul Roma, but so many other iterations of this most iconic of groups made for utterly breathtaking wrestling television.

In terms of the origins of the Four Horsemen, there was no official formation as such, yet the night that's viewed as the real beginning of the stable was 29 September 1985 at Atlanta's famed Omni.

There, babyface NWA Worlds Champion Ric Flair successfully defended his title in a Steel Cage affair against the vicious Nikita Koloff. Post-match, the Nature Boy would be attacked by Nikita and Ivan Koloff, with Dusty Rhodes rushing to Flair's side.

Catching everybody off guard, Arn and Ole Anderson headed to the ring and joined Flair in delivering a 3-on-1 mauling of Dusty that caused those in attendance to legitimately riot. And there, the unofficial formation of the Four Horsemen took place.

Tully Blanchard soon joined this trio, with JJ Dillon managing the group. But it wasn't until Double A casually dropped a reference to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse a few weeks later than this faction was officially named.
