10 Greatest Ladder Matches In WWE History
7. The New Brood Vs. Edge & Christian - No Mercy 1999
The WrestleMania 2000 triangle ladder match between The Hardys, Dudleys, and E&C is usually seen as a landmark for WWE. It was certainly a catalyst for the promotion's more regular incorporation of 'extreme' action - and eventually led to the birth of the TLC stipulation, the Money in the Bank ladder match, and so on.
However, even that original seed had a precursor of its own, a match which took place a matter of months earlier at No Mercy 1999. At that show, Matt and Jeff (under their short-lived 'New Brood' moniker) took on Edge and Christian in the finals of the 'Terri Invitational Tournament'.
Although not quite as complex and high-risk as ladder matches which would take place over the next few years, this bout certainly bares early hallmarks of the style it would inspire. A particularly memorable moment saw Jeff jumping onto one end of a pair of prone ladders, sending the other side springing into the air like a weaponised see-saw. Later he'd escape doom by thrillingly leaping from a falling ladder to an adjacent one.
If it hasn't yet become clear, Jeff is something of a specialist in these situations.
Eventually, Matt and Jeff were able to secure the suspended bag, winning $100,000 and Terri's managerial services as a result. This would end their partnership with Gangrel, and even Terri didn't stick around for too long - eventually making way for Lita, and the most recognisable incarnation of 'Team Xtreme'.
