10 Greatest Manager/Wrestler Combinations Ever

9. 'Captain' Lou Albano & The Wild Samoans

'Captain' Lou Albano was one of the most successful managers in the history of the sport, managing a record 15 tag teams to championship glory over his long and winding 42-year career.

This list contained teams as varied as the British Bulldogs, The Valiant Brothers and the Blackjacks, to name but three.

It is his association with Afa and Sika, better known as the Wild Samoans, that resonates most clearly, though. Their gimmick was that of complete savages (this was the 70s and 80s after all), and the team would have wild success (yes, bad pun intended), winning 21 tag team championships around the world.

It was the Captain who held their insanity together. In the rare interviews they gave they would respond to questions with a variety of grunts and whistles, speaking in a dialect that only Albano could seemingly understand.

It was an example of the perfect manager fitting the perfect gimmick. Aesthetically, it worked a charm, and Albano had just enough smarts to guide the Samoans to great success.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
