10 Greatest Opening Entrants In WWE Royal Rumble History

6. Ax And Smash - 1989

It€™s often touted that the Royal Rumble match is €œevery man for himself€, but rarely has that statement been any truer than it was at the 1989 edition. The two men to get the contest underway were Demoliton€™s Ax and Smash€”who also just happened to be the reigning WWE World Tag Team Champions. Not that they let that slight detail get in the way though, with both men wasting little time before laying into one another. It was the perfect showcase of one of the Rumble€™s biggest appeals€”a match capable of producing all kinds of unlikely match-ups. Where else in the WWE could you see the Tag Team Champions pitted against each other? As it happened, Ax in fact came close to eliminating his partner, but Smash managed to hang on to save himself. Shortly after that, though, the number three entrant arrived in the gargantuan shape of André the Giant. This 500+ pound wake-up call saw Ax and Smash quickly bury the hatchet and begin working as a team once more.
