Earl and Dave Hebner participated in one of the most memorable angles ever – the night Hulk Hogan finally lost the WWE Championship.

On February 5, 1988, the Hulkster defended the title against Andre the Giant in a rematch from WrestleMania III. It was live on NBC’s “The Main Event”, drawing a record 15.2 Nielsen rating and 33 million viewers. As Andre slammed Hogan and made the cover, the referee, presumably known official Dave Hebner, counted to three despite Hogan’s shoulder clearly being up. Andre was crowned the new champion, and immediately handed the tile over to Ted DiBiase.

As Hogan went berserk, another referee came out, looking exactly like the one in the ring. Fans later found out that the Million Dollar Man had paid for a random referee to have plastic surgery to look like Dave Hebner and pull off the screwjob. In reality, Earl Hebner had just debuted in WWE.
