10 Greatest Special Guest Referee Performances In WWE

3. Muhammad Ali, WrestleMania 1

Shawn Michaels Referee
WWE

From one heavyweight boxing legend to another. Perhaps the greatest fighter of all time - certainly a man who knew his way around the pageantry of professional wrestling - Muhammad Ali was sports entertainment before Vince McMahon caused us all to retch at the sound of the term.

Like Tyson, Ali was on the outside for much of the match in the Enforcer role, his Parkinson’s disease not allowing for too much physicality. However, the GOAT has to be high on this list for his contribution to one of the biggest gambles in wrestling history. He was the model of bravado and charisma that many wrestlers based their entire character on, and he still had a bit of the old swagger in him here.

We all know what a massive gamble Vince took when he booked WrestleMania 1 and having a sporting legend on hand to close the show brought in instant attention. The mere presence of boxing heavyweight king in the main event of the first-ever WrestleMania gave instant credibility to the event as a whole, let alone a match featuring Mr. T up against Roddy Piper.
