10 Greatest WCW Halloween Havoc Matches

3. Thundercage Match - Ric Flair And Sting vs. Great Muta And Terry Funk (Halloween Havoc 1989)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAMY_swXQHM For the first Halloween Havoc main event, Jim Crockett Promotions pulled out all the stops. It scheduled a huge tag team main event featuring four of the top stars, not to mention two of the most heated rivalries, and booked "The Living Legend" Bruno Sammartino to serve as guest referee. If a contest pitting "Nature Boy" Ric Flair and Sting against Terry Funk and The Great Muta was not enough, the company introduced a truly contrived gimmick match called the Thundercage, a horrific chamber of torture and chaos to really capitalize on the whole Halloween theme. Was it over-the-top? Absolutely. But it helped make the match feel that much more special. With Gary Hart, the evil manager of Muta at ringside and prepared to throw in the towel if the opportunity presented itself, the stage was set for a match that would have fans of the NWA buzzing about in the days that followed. The four competitors beat the unholy hell out of one another throughout the match, which started as a traditional tag bout but broke down to the point that it became more reminiscent of a Texas Tornado rules contest. Flair understandably targeted the knee of the unstable Terry Funk, then proceeded to lock him in the vaunted Figure Four leg lock. With Muta out of commission, Sting climbed the ropes and came off with repeatedly splashes to Funk. With no fight left in the future Hall of Famer, Hart made the decision that was in the best interest of his team and threw the towel in, ending Funk's punishment and awarded the victory to the babyfaces.
