10 Greatest WTF Swerves In Wrestling History

8. Flair Forms The Four Horsemen

On September 29th in Atlanta, Ric Flair would compete against Nikita Koloff in a grueling cage match, retaining the NWA World Championship. After the match, Koloff€™s Russian brethren would enter the ring and deliver a beatdown to the champion €“ and Dusty Rhodes, The American Dream, would run to the ring to save his longtime rival, for patriotism€™s sake burying the hatchet. In a dramatic twist though, Flair would turn on his saviour, his allies Ole and Arn Anderson rushing to the ring to hold down Rhodes, as the Nature Boy beat him over and over, kayfabe breaking his ankle in the process. It was a stunning angle, as fans in attendance had popped big time for Rhode's run in to defend the champion's American honour against the evil Soviets. Flair's contemptuous disregard of The Dream's integrity was a slap in the face to the actual American Dream, a selfish, meanspirited act... the perfect heel angle to bring in the perfect heel faction. The Four Horsemen would be named at a television taping early the following year, in an infamous interview in which Arn Anderson would snarl that the four of them had wreaked as much havoc as the Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse, and a legend would be born. In the meantime, Dusty Rhodes would sell the leg injury and return to feud with Flair and his cronies throughout 1986, making a ton of money in the process.
