No October match compares to the first ever Hell In A Cell that took place in St. Louis, Missouri in October 1997.

By 1997, the longstanding cage match that WWE had used as the quintessential blow-off match had become somewhat long in the tooth. In addition, Michaels, as well as other talents, had complained of the blue-bar styled cage being difficult to work with, requesting a mesh cage as seen in the NWA and WCW. The end result was a chain-link super-cage that not only covered the ring but also surrounded the ringside area, including floor mats, and was covered with a roof. It was billed as being an inescapable structure for the oft-fleeing Michaels, who would finally have to face The Undertaker one-on-one.

As was expected, The Undertaker ultimately got the better of Michaels, pummeling him to a bloody pulp. The match included notorious spots like Undertaker lawn-darting Shawn into the side of the cell and Michaels falling off the side wall, crashing down onto the announcer's table.

As the Heartbreak Kid lay motionless in the center of the ring awaiting sure defeat, the lights went out and an eerie sound of organ music began playing throughout the Kiel Center. Seconds later, Paul Bearer's big, red, masked monster Kane arrived and delivered a Tombstone to his brother The Undertaker, ensuring victory for the nearly-unconscious Michaels.

Despite being the first, it's often considered the greatest cell match in WWE history and it's also the greatest WWE main event that ever happened in October.
