Before the days where pay-per-views were used as definitive blow-off points for feuds, Roberts and Rude warred from the spring of 1988 well into the autumn months, but didn't face off at the inaugural SummerSlam. Instead, they had separate singles matches, crossing paths once earlier in the night in a brawl.

Playing off of his gimmick of an entitled lothario, during an episode of WWF Superstars, Rude went into his post-match routine of trying to woo a female in the crowd, only for her to reject him, revealing that she was Roberts' wife Cheryl. Rude grabbed her, and Jake quickly made the save.

The feud intensified throughout the summer, with Rude wearing airbrushed tights with Cheryl's face over the crotch and rear. In one instance, an incensed Roberts ripped them off, giving the illusion to the home viewer that Rude was stripped bare.
