Hart was disappointed to not be working with Hulk Hogan for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam 1993, and found himself getting an unlikely consolation prize.

Lawler took umbrage with Hart winning that year's King of the Ring tournament, proclaiming himself to be the real 'King' of WWE. After attacking Hart at the coronation, Lawler focused his energy on denigrating the Hart family, including insulting Stu and Helen in the crowd of a Monday Night Raw taping while Bret wrestled Bam Bam Bigelow.

Hart finally got Lawler into the ring at SummerSlam, and the crowd came unglued as Hart took out two and a half months worth of frustrations by snaring Lawler in the Sharpshooter for over three minutes, which also injured "The King" for real. Hart cinched up extra tight as payback for Lawler's carelessness in other instances during the course of the feud.
