The "Highway to Hell" began cleverly enough. Undertaker provided looming insurance against Vince McMahon's corrupt officiating at Over the Edge 1998, allowing Austin to beat the odds and retain his championship after a wild match with Dude Love.

The distant staredown between Stone Cold and "The Dead Man" afterward came with a clear message: Undertaker wanted a shot at the gold in exchange for his back-up.

Throughout the summer, some miscommunications led to dissension between WWE's top heroes, and that led to accusations that Undertaker was in cahoots with his estranged brother, Kane. Soundtracked along the way by the classic AC/DC song, that "Highway to Hell" led to SummerSlam, where Austin barely won an epic clash of larger-than-life figures, indirectly leading Undertaker into darker pastures with the eventual advent of the Ministry of Darkness.
