Fans had already started turning on John Cena by 2006, but that doesn’t change the fact that he and Edge had one of the year’s most compelling rivalries. The duo put on a number of high profile matches throughout Edge’s star-making year, and it kicked-off when the Canadian successfully cashed-in his Money In The Bank briefcase to become WWE Champion for the first time that January.

Cena won the belt back three weeks later, but the bad blood didn’t end there. By July, Edge had regained the championship by defeating Rob Van Dam, and he and Cena were once again on a collision course. Edge defeated John in his own hometown (Boston) at SummerSlam, but the stakes were raised, and the duo were booked in a TLC match at Unforgiven.

Edge was hailed like folk hero in Toronto, while Cena was jeered to the heavens. The duo put on another excellent match, but it concluded in the most disappointing fashion. Cena pulled Edge onto his shoulders atop a ladder, and tossed him through a set of stacked tables with a super AA. The bell ring, and Cena was champion once more.

Toronto was ablaze with fury. A drink was thrown at a morose-looking Cena as he made his way up the ramp, and while Edge would progress to capture nine further world titles throughout his career, this was a crushing blow.
