When Finn Bálor was struck down by injury on the night of his Universal title victory at SummerSlam 2016, fans began to count down the days until he would be fit enough to reclaim his crown.

Only, when Bálor did finally return to WWE programming he was thrown into filler feuds with Elias and Bray Wyatt.

No matter, he'd soon be back in the title picture before the year was out, right?

Not exactly.

In fact, Bálor's first Universal title match since returning from injury only took place in August 2018 on an episode of Raw against then-champ Roman Reigns, nearly two years after he relinquished the belt.

Despite losing this title match, Bálor still found a way to get himself back in the hunt for the red belt again and against all odds he finally earned a PPV opportunity against Universal Champion Brock Lesnar at the Royal Rumble in 2019.

Bálor lost this match, too.

The company had quite clearly soured on him in that top spot and an epic PPV title match which could've re-established Bálor as a serious force in WWE was put off for way too long.

Luckily, he's back on NXT and now proving exactly why Vince McMahon was stupid to think that he had nothing to offer as a main eventer. Yet, you can't help but wonder what kind of atmosphere would have been generated had Bálor challenged Lesnar for the Universal title as soon as he re-emerged from the shadows.
