WWE is not a meritocracy.

If it were, Samoa Joe would already be WWE Champion, rather than simply having his second shot at AJ Styles' title. 'The Samoan Submission Machine' has taken dialogue that had the potential to sink a lesser talent and made it soar. Threats to 'The Phenomenal One's' family have been perfectly pitched - just the right side of camp without ever veering into comedy, Joe's fairytale rendition on the go-home edition of SmackDown Live was the icing on a beautifully baked cake.

It's a cake Joe will most likely have his face smashed into at Hell In A Cell. Styles' run remains on fumes after unsalvagable runs against Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn and Shinsuke Nakamura, but the pair are already scheduled to do battle again at Australian mega-event Super Show-Down in October. Styles couldn't polish off his Challenger at SummerSlam but will likely squeak by him here if only to build drama for yet another match. A super-service model serviced, if not a deserving performer.

WWE is not a meritocracy.
