10 Hushed Scandals That Rocked Wrestling
1. Benoit
WWE would like you to forget all about Chris Benoit. Despite his face being all over their network archives, he is not someone to be discussed. It’s best to think that he never existed. He is the ultimate hushed wrestling scandal.
Benoit was considered one of the best wrestlers on the planet while he was alive, but he was disturbingly growing very paranoid at the tail end of his career and life. He started to believe he was being followed, he thought he was going to be cut from WWE at any point, and in addition to that, his personal life was going to hell. A mix of a toxic marriage, severe head trauma, and a body filled with 10 times the normal amount of testosterone all came together one terrible night to end three lives.
It became one of the most horrifying wrestling stories of all time, and easily the biggest since the death of Owen Hart. But while most would agree Hart’s was an accident, it seemed that something had to have triggered Benoit's rage. But what? The McMahon’s made the media rounds, and flat-out refused to believe that brain damage from his years in the ring had anything to do with it.
An ill-advised memorial aired of Benoit on Raw the day his body was found, but it started before the full story broke out. As the show progressed, the details poured in and it seemed increasingly likely that he Benoit had killed his wife, child and himself. McMahon appeared on ECW the following night, offered a mea culpa and vowed that his former employee's name would never be mentioned again on WWE TV. So far, it hasn't.
