It can sound like a crash, or a whack, or a slap, depending on if the wrestler in question gets their hands up, or takes it across the back, or simply succumbs to the skull-rattling fury of steel on skin and bone. But there's no denying that sound echoes in the ears and the memories of every wrestling fan.

It's hard to imagine ECW or Attitude Era-WWE without those sounds. It's just as hard not to cringe in retrospect, now that we know what we know about brain injuries and CTE. It's hard to think back on The Rock destroying a handcuffed Mick Foley in front of his family with chair shot after chair shot.

By the same token, it's hard not to lionize intrepid babyfaces battling the then-unstoppable Kane, chasing him off with desperation chair shots until he was forced into a reluctant retreat, earning our embattled heroes a moment of hard-won rest.

The chair shot is a double-edged sword, an undeniable part of wrestling history with a troubling legacy.
