10 Important Decisions AEW Have To Make
4. Mid-Card Title
Pro wrestling is all about building talent to put on the best performances possible. And a mid-card title is a huge tool in accomplishing just that. Even the likes of John Cena was elevated by a masterful run with the United States title. Think of how many careers have been launched by having these stepping stones to the top of the card in place. But you also have to do it correctly.
That same United States title is now a shell of what it was when John held it around 2005. WWE are guilty of trying to get too many people over at once. Cena even dropped the title to Carlito, a sort of symbol of the grim future of that title. These types of quick title changes to get someone over can’t happen. If a mid-card belt is to do the work it should, long feuds and grueling matches need to be a big part of building it properly first.
This should come easily as there is no shortage of talent at AEW’s disposal. But execution will determine whether or not it can help define that talent. It is a tough battle of letting the talent establish the belt, so the belt can eventually establish the talent. And part of that is keeping the titles to a minimum as well. Too much gold going around, and it starts to feel like participation trophies.
