10 Improvements UFC Has To Make
8. League System For Rankings
This one could ruffle a few feathers upon inception, but - given a bit of time - it would sort out which contender legitimately deserved the next title shot or not.
Leagues are part and parcel of sport, yet this concept has rarely been used in the world of MMA.
Understandably, the usual seasonal platform would need to be looked at. With fighters only competing a couple of times a year, a one off event or calculation based on the current roster's records (over the last few years) would help set up the table to be utilised for future match-ups.
A points system could be implemented - 3 points for a KO or Submission, 2 for a decision, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss - with the champion taking on whoever is top at the moment they are scheduled to fight.
Due to the amount of fighters that are signed to the company at present, multiple leagues could also be brought into play. This could open the door for relegation/promotion fights further down the line and lower league belts, with only the top 10 fighters in the highest ranked league being able to challenge the undisputed champion in the division - for whatever period is settled on for the season's duration.
It would definitely take some work to fully create a fair and competitive system, but it would make a whole lot more sense than the current ranking systems.
