10 Incidents That Led WCW To Destruction

6. The Fingerpoke Of Doom

Following Bischoff's misguided attempt to keep people watching Nitro, he could at least take some solace in the fact that the evening's show featured a main event between the newly crowned Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan for the WCW Championship. Nash had recently won the title from Goldberg thanks to the cattle prod incident mentioned earlier and it had now been drawn into the drama revolving around the unsettled members of the NWO Despite many being upset at the way Goldberg had dropped the title, the dynamic of the in-feuding between members of the NWO, coupled with the uncertainty revolving around how Goldberg would react to the nature of his loss, still allowed for some intrigue to surround the future of the title and the promotion as a whole. That future was set in stone during the main event of the January 4th Monday Nitro, in which Hulk Hogan poked Kevin Nash in the chest and Nash dropped to the canvas as though he'd been shot. The WCW Championship changed hands and the NWO was once again united under one banner to the joy of practically nobody in the crowd. When contrasted with Mick Foley's title win on the same night it immediately became clear which promotion was going to offer the more exciting viewing over the coming months. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Di2DX_3KStQ In one fell swoop WCW managed to send many of their fans to the competition, reformed a group that fans were already sick to death of and devalued their main championship. It wasn't the worst that the belt would suffer though. That was saved for later.
