There has been some fair criticism of WWE through the years for having a very limited cast of true main-event superstars, remaining locked in to a small cadre of wrestlers entrusted to close out the biggest show of the year.

Given that, we’ve seen a handful of repeat main events through the years. The Rock and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin closed out three WrestleManias: 15, 17 and 19. Rock and John Cena were last to go on at WrestleManias 28 and 29. Bret Hart and Yokozuna would have joined them for Mania IX and X if not for Hulk Hogan.

But Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes set a rather unique record at WrestleMania 40: Their matches at 39 and 40 were the first time there were identical title defenses in the main event, with Roman defending the Undisputed WWE Universal Heavyweight Championship against Cody to close out both events.

Odds are you won’t see this record broken for a while, unless Reigns comes back to challenge Rhodes next year. Barring that, fans should expect to see variety in their main event title matches going forward.
