It used to be that winning the Royal Rumble meant you were destined for huge things, that your big moment at WrestleMania was all but an assured thing.

Through 2007, the Rumble winner won a world title at Mania far more frequently than he lost it. Four straight losses from 2008-11 by Rumble winners and a 3-7 record from 2008-18 greatly damaged the luster of winning a Rumble and then going on to “main event WrestleMania,” as the announcers love to crow.

In fact, the last two men’s winners (Edge and Brock Lesnar) and last year’s women’s Rumble winner (Ronda Rousey) lost at Mania. Overall, Rumble winners are 19-14 when challenging for a world title at WrestleMania. That’s a dismal 57.5% success rate, hardly the vaunted rocket push to the top that the Rumble used to signify.

While many of us still get excited for the Rumble and celebrate the winner, the best way to restore some of the prestige that winning the big match used to carry is to have wrestlers go on to win the world title at WrestleMania a few times in a row. Take us on that journey and fans will reward you for putting your faith in them enjoying a good story.
