While Steve Austin’s talent seems pretty obvious to any fan of professional wrestling, Eric Bischoff and even Vince McMahon weren’t overly impressed at first. This is why after being released from WCW, Austin found himself in ECW. Paul Heyman finally saw him as a superstar, and even though The Rattlesnake was injured, the promoter gave him the opportunity to cut promos on TV.

About what? Whatever he wanted.

Austin discovered a new side of himself, and quickly began cutting some of the most entertaining promos in the entire business. He showed a serious side of himself that he never revealed in WCW and he also did flat out ridiculous impressions of Bischoff and Hulk Hogan. He tore down Nitro and had a blast doing it. The man was simply dynamite and showed how wide-ranging his talent was. Austin later credited Heyman for helping how to cut a promo.

Even though he wasn't in ECW long, his reinvention helped him finally land that job in the WWF...as The Ringmaster. It took many more months of frustration but eventually, McMahon saw what everyone saw and turned Austin into the biggest money maker the business has ever seen.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
