10 Indisputable Reasons Why Vince McMahon Is Not A Genius
7. He Botches Foolproof Storylines
When is the last time that you watched a WWE storyline and felt that it was satisfying from start to finish? Undertaker vs. HHH in the "End of an Era" story? Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho? For some fans, it may feel like years since theyve seen a well thought out and well executed story. What prevents Vince from genius territory is that he books all sorts of angles horribly. In fact, there have been giant, sure fire, money-making storylines over the years that appeared nearly impossible to fail that were bungled under his watch.
When WCW was absorbed by WWE, it should have been the biggest storyline of all time. It was two companies who had battled each other for decades finally getting to settle it all in the ring. But WWE only got one good pay-per-view buyrate from it (Invasion), instead of years worth of success. Surely a genius wouldnt have messed up such a simple storyline so badly. This was WCW, vs. the WWF, it practically wrote itself! Oh, but did Vince McMahon ever mess it up. He let his ego get in the way and made every WCW wrestler look vastly inferior to his talent. There was no war to speak of, it was just a series of massacres. He also didnt bother signing any big names, and he didnt protect the brand itself to someday give it its own show.
A year later, the New World Order came into the company with Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. That lasted a few months before dying a painful death as well. Eric Bischoff made millions with those three and revolutionized the business. McMahon either didnt get it, or just didnt care to get what made them work. How about the resurrection of ECW? After the companys hot 2005 pay-per-view of One Night only, it was clear that fans were still passionate about the brand. Vince soon did away with all that nonsense when he again showed us that the ECW originals were nothing but a bunch of scrubs, and later made such hardcore legends like Chavo Guerrero and The Big Show as the companys world champions.
Again and again, Vince has proved that more often than not he cant spearhead a consistent and intriguing story. Even Daniel Bryans feel good ascension to the top of the company was more dumb luck than anything. Had CM Punk not quit the company, had the Daniel Wyatt story not failed, and had Batista not bombed embarrassingly bad as a babyface then Bryan wouldnt have received the opportunity. Yes, Vince has made a lot of money in wrestling, but imagine how much deeper his pockets could be had he been a little more careful planning out major stories.
